Preparing For Your Lifestyle Newborn Session at Home

Lifestyle newborn photography is all about capturing those real-life, everyday moments with your new baby in a relaxed, natural way.

It’s like having a friend with a camera come over to document those early days—the cuddles, the little yawns, those adorable stretches! It’s about preserving the genuine emotions and connections between you and your baby, without formal posing and props. It’s real, personal, and completely focused on who you are as a family.

when to have your session

If you’re after those sweet, sleepy moments where your little angel looks completely zen, aim for within the first couple of weeks of birth— they tend to sleep deeply during this time, making it easier to get those cuddly, quiet moments. If you’re more into capturing some of their early expressions, eye contact, and a little more personality, waiting until around 3-4 weeks would be perfect. Plus, a little extra time gives any skin issues a chance to settle. Planning for mid-morning is ideal since babies tend to be a bit less fussy earlier in the day. If your little one is the opposite or the morning light doesn’t flatter the rooms you’d like to use, late afternoon works too! As for duration, up to 2 hours is usually sufficient! This gives time for a relaxed schedule with plenty of time for extra feedings, diaper changes, etc.

Finding the Perfect Spot

Look for a few spots in your home with big windows that let that soft, natural light flood in. Think nursery, master bedroom, or your family room— a bed or sofa allows everyone to get in nice and close, giving off that snuggly vibe. That being said, a simple soft, neutral comforter works best for your bed. You could always add a few pillows or a throw for a pop of color. Also, please open up all blinds and curtains and turn off all of the overhead lights so I can get an idea of the areas with the best lighting after I arrive. Last thing, keep the temperature at a reasonable level so your baby stays warm and comfy.

cleaning up

No need to stress about deep-cleaning the whole house! Focus on tidying up the rooms where we’ll be taking photos—like clearing off surfaces and tossing any visible clutter out of sight. If there's any area we want to use that isn’t ready, we can take care of that the day of (that’s why I always plan to arrive a bit early).

CHOosing clothing

When it comes to outfits, neutrals are perfect. Think soft creams, beiges, or any light, soothing colors. This allows for the focus to remain on your baby’s sweet face in your final images. For mom, wear something comfortable and flattering. A flowy dress, a soft sweater and pants, whatever makes you feel most confident! Also, giving yourself a little extra prep time will help you feel calm and ready. I want this to be a relaxing, enjoyable experience for you. For dad and the rest of the family, keep it plain and simple using the colors below as inspo. And forgo the shoes! This adds to that relaxed feeling and who doesn’t love being barefoot?

Tips for Baby

Make sure baby is fed before my arrival and changed with a clean diaper. Plain white diapers are best so the patterns don't distract in the photos or show through their clothing. Honestly, a white onesie or another soft light color is perfect. If you’d like any bare-skin shots of baby, leave them in their diaper so we can get those first and not have to change their outfit too often. If you have any special bows for baby we can incorporate those as well. This is a great time to choose something meaningful to you or just something you love, like a swaddle or knotted gown.

Another perk— you can include your pets!

When you look back years from now, seeing your family pet will make your photos that much more meaningful.

something else to think about

If breastfeeding is part of your journey and you want to include that as well, just give me a heads-up beforehand. It’s all about celebrating those natural, beautiful moments.

and finally…

Sometimes, getting out of the house can feel more appealing for your newborn session and central Ohio has countless beautiful studio spaces to rent by the hour. If this interests you, I’ll share my favorite spots that feel like home.
